14th Annual Meeting & Regional Scientific Conference
“Gearing up towards technological advancement through Microbiology”
26-27 October 2006 /  Iloilo Grand Hotel, Iloilo City

The Iloilo Grand Hotel, Iloilo City was the venue of the 14th Annual Meeting and Regional Conference held on October 26-27, 2006 with its theme  “Gearing up towards technological advancement through Microbiology”. The conference was highlighted by the keynote address by Dr. Lydia Depra-Ramos, Region VI  DOH Director and the opening remarks of the PSM National President Ernelea P. Cao. There were six plenary lectures, two contributed papers, and a workshop on “Primary Detection of Multiple-Drug Resistance in Common Non-fastidious Pathogen” delivered by Dr. Delia Ontengco of UNILAB, Philippines.


2004-2005
13th Annual Meeting & Scientific Convention
"Agro-Industrial Sustainability and Food Safety through Microbiology and Biotechnology"
8-9 December 2005 / University of San Carlos-Talamban, Cebu City


The 2006 Annual Meeting and Scientific Convention of the Philippine Society for Microbiology (PSM) Visayas with theme  “Agro-Industrial Sustainability and Food Safety through Microbiology and Biotechnology” was held in the University of San Carlos Talamban Campus, Cebu City on December 8-9, 2005 thru the effort of Dr. Danilo Largo.   Leading the list of guest were: Cebu City Honorable Mayor Michael L. Rama, who delivered the Keynote Address and Dr. Maribel L. Dionisio-Sese, PSM National President who gave the opening remarks. There were six plenary lectures in the two-day conference which include:  “Predictive Microbiology and Applications in Food safety” by Dr. Manuel Garcia; "Innate Immune Response of Fish Against Virus Infections: Role of the Myxovirus Resistance (MX) Gene" by Dr. Christopher Marlowe A. Caipang; "Understanding Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI): Information Education Campaign (IEC)”  by Dr. Daniel C. Ventura, Jr.; “Updates on Acquired Immune. Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)” by Dr. Arlene Gutierrez; "Hazard Analyses and Critical Control Point (HACCP) as Applied to Airline Catering” by Benigno Glenn R. Ricaforte; and “Philippine Mangroves: Heaven of Microbial Resources with Potential Agro-industial Uses” by Dr. Rosario G. Monsalud.  Aside from the plenary lectures, five other contributed papers were delivered and two workshops on the second day.

2003-2004
12th Annual Meeting and Regional Scientific Conference
"Microbiology & Biotechnology: Evolving Trends and Times"
21-22 October 2004 / Faith Resort, Boracay Island, Aklan

The 12th PSM Visayas regional convention was held at the Faith Retreat and Conference Center, Boracay Island, Aklan on October 21-22, 2004. PSM National President Dr. Maribel Dionisio-Sese graced  the opening ceremony and also delivered a plenary lecture entitled “Microalgae and Cyanobacteria as Sources of Fine Chemicals” on the second day of the conference. The Boracay convention included six other plenary lecturers namely, Dr. Joselito Limcumpao, “Etiology and Epidemiology of Avian Influenza Virus Infections”; Dr. Wolfgang Reichardt, “Interfaces make a difference for aquatic bacteria: New paradigms of their physiology, ecology, and environmental health”; Dr. Aklani Rose Hidalgo, “Meeting Microbiological Standards for Fish and Fishery Products for Export”; Dr. Malbar Ferrer, “DOTS: The Way to Fight TB”; Dr. Ramon Maluping, “Potential Aquatic Bacterial Pathogens: Studies on the occurrence, characterization, and detection of potential virulence determinants”; and Dr. Rolando Pakingking, “Resistance against VHS virus in marine fish precedingly infected with Aquabirnavirus”. There were four contributed papers from the Angeles University Foundation, UP Diliman, and Asian Alcohol. Another highlight was the launching of the PSM Visayas website to link the chapter to the global community of microbiologists.

2002-2003
11th Annual Meeting and Regional Scientific Convention
"Advancing the Frontiers of Microbiology and Biotechnology"
23-24 October 2003 / Cebu Holiday Plaza Hotel, Cebu City

 The Philippine Society for Microbiology (PSM), Visayas Regional Chapter and co-sponsored by the Biology Department and College of Pharmacy of University of San Carlos held its  11th Annual Meeting and 5th Regional Scientific Convention at the Cebu Holiday Plaza Hotel, Cebu City on October 23-24, 2003. The keynote speaker of the convention is Rev. Fr. Roderick Crisol Salazar, Jr. , SVD , President of the University of San Carlos.  The PSM National Chapter President, Dr. Rhodora Carlos graced the conference by delivering the opening remarks and  World Health Organization’s representative to the Philippines Dr. Jean Marc Olive discussed on “Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)” in his Keynote Lecture.


2001-2002
10th Annual Meeting and Regional Conference 
"Updates on Microbiology and Biotechnology"
17-18 October 2002 / Four Season Hotel, Iloilo City

10th Annual Meeting of the Philippine Society for Microbiology (PSM) - Visayas Chapter and Updates in Microbiology Lectures were held in Iloilo City on October 17 & 1.8, 2002. The venue of the two-day meeting is the Four Season Hotel located at Delgado Street. The keynote speaker of the program is Dr. Agnes Zamora, Chair of the Philippine Academy of Microbiology (PAM) of the PSM, Inc. Other speakers included microbiology experts from Luzon who were especially invited as resource persons were Dr. Macrina Zafaralla of UPLB, Dr. Delia Ontengco of United Laboratories, Dr. Gil Jacinto of UP-MSI, Dr. Gilda Lio-Po of SEAFDEC, Dr. Ella Deocadiz of DENR-EMB, Dr. Esperanza Cabrera of De Ia Salle University, Dr. Edgardo Gonzaga of Western Visayas Sanitarium, Dr. Peter Sobrevega of DA Region VI, Dr. Virginia Barraquio of UPLB, Dr. Cynthia P. Saloma of UP-NIMBB and Dr. Cynthia Hedreyda of UP-NIMBB .The participants came from several islands that compose the Visayas region.


2000-2001
4th Regional Biennial Convention
"Linking the Academe with Industry in Microbiology"
18-19 October 2001 / University of Negros Occ., Recoletos, Bacolod City

 The Philippine Society for Microbiology, Inc. (PSM) Visayas Chapter helds its 4th  Biennial Convention on October 18-19, 2001 at the University of Negros Occidental — Recoletos (UNO-R). These dates were especially chosen so that participants will also be able to witness the popular “Masskara” festival of Bacolod City which culminated on October 20-21, 2001. Coinciding PSM Visayas’ 7th Anniversary, the convention with its theme: “Linking the Academe with Industry in Microbiology”  expected to convene microbiologists, medical technologists, medical doctors, teachers, researchers, and practitioners for a two-day convention.  Highlighting the event were the keynote speech of The Hon. Carlos Cojuangco, representative, 4th District, Negros Occidental, and keynote lecture of Dr. Cynthia T. Hedreyda, President of PSM National Chapter. Dr. Hedreyda of the National Institute of  Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, University of the Philippines, Diliman, on the topic “ Promoting the Translation of Research to Marketable Products through the Industry-Academe Collaboration”.

3rd Regional Convention : "Food and Health Security Thru Microbiology"
21-22 October 1999 / University of San Agustin, Iloilo City

 The PSM, Inc., VISAYAS CHAPTER held its Third Regional convention at the University of San Agustin, Iloilo City on 2 1-22 October 19999 under the able leadership of its president Ms Victoria Sustento. The theme “Food and Health Security through Microbiology “has very well captured the concerns of our time. The Keynote Address was delivered by Professor E.B. Gareth Jones, a Visiting Professor from the Department of Biology and Chemistry, City University of Hong Kong who eloquently expounded on the present theme. Two Keynote Lectures were given,” Applications of Microbiology in Agriculture” by Dr. Ma. Lourdes Sison, Project Leader, Agricultural Forestry, Biotechnology Program of BIOTECH, UPLB, and “TB Problems in the Philippines” By Dr. Thelma Tupasi, Director, Tropical Medicine Foundation , Makati Medical Center.


1997-1998
Conference on "Tropical Microbial Diversity"
19-20 October 1998 / UP Visayas, Miagao

The Philippine Society for Microbiol­ogy (PSM) Visayas Chapter held a series of workshops/roundtable discussion on tropical fungi, bacteria, and microalgae during the Conference on Tropical Micro­bial Diversity at UP. in the Visayas, Miag-ao, Iloilo on October 19-20, 1998. This was spearheaded by its President Dr. Rex Sadaba held to access research sta­tus, identify strategies and gaps for biodiversity studies, and identify linkages on microbial diversity.

1996-1997
2nd Regional Convention: "Enhancing Regional Development Thru Microbiology"
23-24 October 1997 / CPU, Iloilo City

The Second Regional Convention was held at the Central Philippine University on October 23-24, 1997. The theme was “Enhancing Regional Development through Microbiology”. The two - day convention included keynote lectures and invited papers and workshops on selected topics. The keynote address was delivered by Senator Orlando Mercado, the Chair of Senate Committee on Environment and Natural Resources. The keynote lecture delivered by Dr. Jonathan Matias was entitled “Applied Marine Biotechnology Research: Bringing Basic Concepts to Commercial Stages at Nova Pacific Research Institute” Ms. Balanquita de Guzman gave another keynote lecture entitled” Recent Advances in Helicobacter pylon research: The St. Luke’s experience. Three invited papers were presented covering topics on bacterial shrimp diseases, fungal enzyme production and microflora from aquatic environments. Nine poster papers were also exhibited and ten workshop sessions were conducted at CPU laboratories and at SEAFDEC. The workshop sessions has been a unique feature of the Visayas annual convention. The closing ceremony sponsored by SECURA was held at Hotel Del Rio on October 24, 1998. Certificates and Plaques of Appreciation were given during the program.


1995-1996
"Updates in Microbiology"
25 October 1996 / UP Visayas,Miagao, Iloilo

Lecture Series I: Updates in Microbiology was held on February 2, 1995 at the UP in the Visayas, Iloilo City, attended by 69 participants. The lectures which were of agricultural, medical and industrial interest were rendered by scientists from the local and national agencies

Lecture Series II: Updates in Microbiology was conducted on October 22, 1994 at UPV, Iloilo City was attended by 143 participants. Various topics of basic, medical, agricultural, and industrial interest were covered.


1994-1995
1st Annual Convention
Theme: "Microbiology and Biotechnology Toward 21st Century"
26-27 October, 1995
University of the Philippines in the Visayas, Miagao, Iloilo

The First Annual Convention of the PSM Visayas Chapter was held on October 26-27, 1995. The activities that were included were keynote address by Hon. William Padolina,  plenary sessions, reading of scientific papers, workshop/lecture demonstrators on some microbiological techniques, and exhibits.
